The New York Yankees have been very quiet during free agency. They’ve signed no marquee players or made any blockbuster trades. News of the Philadelphia Phillies signing Cliff Lee was a big surprise to a lot. Including the Texas Rangers and New York Yankees.

The Yankees money couldn’t get him to the Big Apple. They practically offered him the world (money and 7 years)and he went back to Philly. The only player the Yankees could get was L.A. Dodgers catcher Russell Martin. Big deal huh?

I guess Lee really never wanted to leave Philadelphia and now he gets to go back and possibly make another World Series trip. Meanwhile the Yankees have C.C. Sabathia and not much else behind him in the rotation. It’s hard to feel sorry for them not getting their man, but personally I love it. I’m glad their money can’t buy everyone. Now they might fall back to the pack a little. I wish I could say the same about the Red Sox, so we won’t have to watch those “epic” Yankees/Red Sox matchups every time a national game comes on.

The Cubs organization will never use the term in front of Cubs fans for fear of backlash, but the Cubs are in a rebuilding process.

Sure, if they can win while they do it all the better, which is why we saw Jim Hendry take a flier on a veteran like Carlos Pena instead of moving Tyler Colvin to first base. But since contending in 2011 seems unlikely, I have a suggestion for Hendry:

If you can move big contracts like Carlos Zambrano without having to eat more than half of the money, what are you waiting for?

There has been some speculation recently about a possible fit for Zambrano with the Yankees, which makes sense now that they missed out on Cliff Lee. It would also reunite Zambrano with Larry Rothschild.

(By the way, I’d pay to see the look on Larry’s face when news that Big Z is following him to the Big Apple. That would be priceless!).

Yet even if Bruce Levine is misguided as usual, you’d have to think that Hendry would at least check into the possibility—especially if he can either obtain some young talent or force the Bombers to also accept Kosuke Fukudome and his ridiculous contract.

Now, Big Z has some say in this matter, to be sure. But I’m sure his no-trade clause is negotiable, like most things in life.

But, if we move Zambrano the rotation will suffer, you say? Um, and this is a concern why? Seriously, with or without Big Z, this rotation is not good enough to win a World Series.

Fat Carlos Silva is unlikely to start the season 8-0 again. And while we’re at it, the Cubs must lead the world in Carloses (is that even a word??). What is up with that?

Look, in order to win the way Tom Ricketts has described, you need good young players coming through the pipeline on a consistent basis. Right now, the system isn’t exactly overflowing with major league-ready talent.

But if you can infuse some fresh talent via trade, now you’ve just jump-started your program and shortened the rebuilding time.

Oops, we can’t call it rebuilding. Is ‘retooling’ more palatable to you Cubs fans?

No matter what happens with Zambrano, if I am Hendry I am looking in every nook and cranny for any opportunities to shed payroll.

Thank God I am not Hendry, incidentally.

The problem with this strategy, aside from having to deal with other GMs who have working grey matter, is that the Cubs don’t want to jeopardize attendance.

But either you’re in or you’re out Mr. Ricketts. You can’t have your cake and eat it too.

By the way, keep Silva away from that cake.

Only the most optimistic of the Chicago Bears Kool-Aid drinkers thought this current Bears team would be in first place with an easy chance at double digit wins this late in the season. In fact, most fans were thinking that this might be Lovie Smith’s final season as head coach. Instead, this resilient Bears squad has clawed its way to a 9-4 record and the division lead.

Still, the surprising success does not mask the fact that this team has holes. A national audience watched the New England Patriots rip apart the Bears on Sunday, and if the vestiges of that carnage don’t tell you something, perhaps the sight of QB Jay Cutler’s prone body laying on the turf 43 times this season screams a bit louder that changes are needed.

But even if this team didn’t have blemishes, consider the fact that the Bears have some players eligible for free agency following the season. For example, on an already shaky offensive line, Olin Kreutz can walk after the season.

It is with all this in mind that we examine the moves the Bears may make this off-season in order to continue contending into the near future.

Improve the Offensive Line Through the Draft and Free Agency

<img alt="FOXBORO, MA - SEPTEMBER 03: Logan Mankins #70 of the New England Patriots looks on before the game against the New York Giants on September 3, 2009 at Gillette Stadium in Foxboro, Massachusetts.
In what is perhaps the most obvious statement this side of “gee it’s been awhile since those Cubbies have won a World Series”, the offensive line is a problem that requires remediation by Jerry Angelo after the season.

For one, he will have to make a decision on the status of potential free agent center Olin Kreutz. Next, he should draft an O-lineman in the early rounds, and sign a free agent left tackle to protect Jay Cutler’s blind side.

On some teams, a guy like Kreutz, who is no longer playing at a Pro Bowl level and who will be playing 2011 at age 34, might be expendable.

However, given all of the challenges already facing this line, Angelo probably wants to re-sign Kreutz. He also needs to take a hard look at former first round pick Chris Williams, swallow some pride and move on. This is not to say that they should release him—that certainly will not happen— but do not count on him as a starter beyond this season.

While the line did play better after the bye week this season, much of that was Mike Martz having to completely move away from his playbook and I can’t see him doing that for another year, assuming he is still around in 2011.

Now, we don’t know how the labor unrest will affect the status of players, but going by the list of potential free agents from around the NFL, there will certainly be some guys who can come in and improve this line.

The first thing they should do is steal Logan Mankins from New England. A lesser option would be to sign Charlie Williams from the Colts, who is good but not elite.

Angelo should also draft a lineman in the early rounds of the NFL draft. If OT Derek Sherrod from Mississippi State is still around when the Bears pick in the first round, they should grab him.

Address Their Own Free Agents

<img alt="CHICAGO - NOVEMBER 28: Danieal Manning #38 of the Chicago Bears fields a kick against the Philadelphia Eagles at Soldier Field on November 28, 2010 in Chicago, Illinois. The Bears defeated the Eagles 31-26.
In addition to Kreutz, there are eight other potential Bears free agents. Some of them, like Rashied Davis and Caleb Haney, should be sent packing. But others either need to be retained or replaced through free agency or the draft. If nothing else, some of these guys are needed for depth.

Desmond Clark will almost certainly be gone; hell, they refuse to use him now. The same goes for Garrett Wolfe. But Anthony Adams and Nick Roach should at least be given some consideration unless they want raises. In that case, they can go away.

Pisa Tinoisamoa, if he can stay healthy, is a good player and is worthy of being re-signed. And Danieal Manning deserves to return for his return skills as well as his versatility.

An interesting question will be punter Brad Maynard. He has never had the strongest leg around, but is one of the best at placing the ball inside the 20. Even at 37 they may wish to bring him back on a short deal.

Get a Better Backup QB

<img alt="EAST RUTHERFORD, NJ - OCTOBER 03: Todd Collins #10 of the Chicago Bears lays on the field after getting injured against the New York Giants at New Meadowlands Stadium on October 3, 2010 in East Rutherford, New Jersey.
The Todd Collins experiment did not work out and there is no evidence that Caleb Haney is ever going to be an NFL QB. So the Bears need to go out and obtain a real backup QB in case Cutler goes through another season of getting flattened like a pancake.

Do the names of potential free agents Marc Bulger, Matt Moore, Jordan Palmer, Seneca Wallace, Drew Stanton, Matt Leinart, Luke McCown, Brodie Croyle, Tyler Thigpen, Jim Sorgi, Mark Brunell, Kellen Clemens, Bruce Gradkowski, Alex Smith, Troy Smith, Matt Hasselbeck, Kerry Collins and Chris Simms do anything for you?

Tavaris Jackson is also eligible for free agency, but with Favre retiring, it would seem that the Vikings will hang onto him.

Oh, and there is this certain Eagles QB who can be a free agent after the season, but he is definitely not a backup. And there is always Rex Grossman. Moving on…

Do NOT Offer Contract Extensions To Lovie Smith and Jerry Angelo

<img alt="LAKE FOREST, IL - MAY 4: The head coach Lovie Smith (L) and general manager Jerry Angelo of the Chicago Bears look over players during a rookie mini-camp practice at Halas Hall May 4, 2007 in Lake Forest, Illinois.
The Bears must avoid the temptation for a knee-jerk reaction by extending the contracts of their head coach and GM. Despite the success this season, there are still legitimate questions about the coaching ability of Lovie and the drafting and talent judgement of Jerry. It’s not as if one year wipes out three bad ones.

It may be better for the long-term health of the Bears organization to get a new GM, which also means a new coach. That won’t happen after this season due to 1) the money owed them; 2) the labor unrest; and 3) the success in 2010.

But avoiding an extension means that we can judge this tandem after the 2011 season.

Go Wide…Receiver, That Is

Nick Laham/Getty Images

As much as young guys like Devin Hester, Johnny Knox and Earl Bennett tease us, there is not a legitimate number one or two WR among the current crop. Could they evolve into ones? Doubtful. But twos? Sure. Even so, Cutler needs someone else to throw to.

Another offensive weapon such as a veteran wideout would be helpful, even if it isn’t a true number one. No matter what, I would draft someone in the early rounds.

It’s unlikely that the Packers would let him go, but Donald Driver is a free agent after the season. Similarly, a much younger Sidney Rice is actually free after the season, though it would take big bucks to sign him. Still, it’s not often that a 24 year-old wideout is on the market. Meanwhile, his ex-teammate Randy Moss is available, but the Bears already passed on him earlier in the season.

Almost all of the Jets and Chargers wideouts will be free, including the Jets’ Santonio Holmes. Other FAs include the Falcons’ Brian Finneran; the Ravens’ tandem of TJ Houshmandzadeh and Donte Stallworth and Santana Moss.

Hey, T.O. has had a nice year…

Draft Intelligently in the Early Rounds

Angelo certainly has had his share of early round misses. He’s been better in the later rounds, but overall it has not been a pretty picture.

This off-season will be the first time in a while that the Bears have even had an early round pick. Last year, their first choice was Major Wright in the third round.

As suggested earlier, the Bears should look to grab an offensive lineman early (and at least one more later) and a wideout. Since you paid such a high price for Cutler, it makes sense to surround him with talent.

Avoid the Offensive Coordinator Carousel

<img alt="CHICAGO - NOVEMBER 28: Offensive coordinator Mike Martz of the Chicago Bears watches as the Bears take on the Philadelphia Eagles at Soldier Field on November 28, 2010 in Chicago, Illinois.
Jay Cutler has had a lack of consistency in his coaching since coming to Chicago and some believe that has affected his play. Last season, he clearly never jelled with the tandem of Ron Turner and Pep Hamilton, but he truly seems to have bought into the Mike Martz system.

Except that this is not the Martz system. Tight ends that catch the ball? A QB that rolls out? A balanced offense?

But since Martz has demonstrated the willingness to adjust, why not bring him back next year and see if the consistency pays off?

Hey, a Little Luck Doesn’t Hurt!

You make your own luck, they say. While that may be true, sometimes injuries just happen and can’t be avoided. Much of the success in 2010 can be attributed to good health, including the return of Brian Urlacher.

If the core veterans can stay healthy in 2011, giving time for the new guys to mesh and the drafted players time to learn, that will allow the team to contend while still building for the near future.

Work on Tackling in Camps and Preseason

<img alt="CHICAGO, IL - DECEMBER 12: BenJarvus Green-Ellis #42 of the New England Patriots runs against the Chicago Bears at Soldier Field on December 12, 2010 in Chicago, Illinois. The Patriots defeated the Bears 36-7.
One of the ongoing problems with the Lovie Smith Bears is that the tackling at times has been sloppy. Now, one valid reason is that the defense preaches taking the ball away, and it’s hard to wrap up when you’re trying to strip the ball.

Don’t expect Smith to change his defense, but tackling is something that can be worked on and should be the focus immediately from the first workout to full pad contact and into the preseason games.

Forget about changing from a base cover 2 scheme; that’s what Lovie knows and he’s not going to change. But this defense needs to tackle better.

Limit Devin Hester to Returing Kicks and Punts

<img alt="CHICAGO, IL - DECEMBER 12: Devin Hester #23 of the Chicago Bears runs against the New England Patriots at Soldier Field on December 12, 2010 in Chicago, Illinois. The Patriots defeated the Bears 36-7.
Look, the Hester-as-receiver experiment will never produce the true number one wideout the Bears had hoped for, so let the man focus on what he does best and go out and acquire and/or draft for help in the receiving corps.

As soon as Devin was used more in the offense, his priorities changed and the thing he did best, returning kicks and punts, suffered.

This year, he has once again returned to glory as his workload has been reduced. So imagine if he’s allowed to focus entirely on returns. We could be witness to an historic season in 2011.

Sure, put him out there occasionally or use him in a trick play once in awhile, but do not ask him to be a wide receiver in this offense. Isn’t it good enough to be one of the best ever at doing one thing?

When you compare stadiums like Cowboys Stadium, New Meadowlands Stadium, and Lucas Oil Stadium, to many of the NFL’s current stadiums, there is no wonder why many of these teams are in need of new places to play.

Fans and players alike are feeling that some of these stadiums need major renovations or even need to build brand new stadiums. When you see how some of these teams are performing in these awful stadiums, there is no surprise that there is a need for change.

Here are the five NFL stadiums that teams should change in the upcoming years.

Jonathan Daniel/Getty Images

5- Soldier Field (Chicago, Illinois)

A surprise to some, but in my opinion Soldier Field needs things done to it immediately. As beautiful as it looks on the outside, the inside of it could be changed. When you have the NFL’s smallest stadium and your team has one of the biggest fanbases, then it is a major problem. The McCaskey family needs to do something about Soldier Fields seating to accommodate the many Bears fans in Chicago.

As much as I love the idea of having an open stadium in snowy Chicago, I think that they should take care of the field a lot more instead of having a garbage looking field in the harsh weather. The field itself, is the main problem with this stadium, as the grass is in awful condition a lot of the times. When you have games immediatley after high school football games than you know that the field is going to be banged up, but the Bears ownership is doing nothing about the fields conditions.

When your own Quarterback, Jay Cuter, is trashing your football field than you know it is time to change a few things up.

4- Edward Jones Dome (St. Louis, Missouri)

The NFL’s most boring stadium comes in at number four on the list. This stadium has nothing that interesting about it, especially the team that plays in it. For Rams fans, they have had a rough few years, especially knowing that their team plays in one of the worst stadiums in the NFL.

Sports Illustrated ranked the Edward Jones Dome as the worst stadium in the NFL out of all the 32 teams and I could see why. First of all the seats in the stadium are painted red. I hope that the Rams owner knows that red is a color completely opposite of the his teams colors.

Also, their stadium is in a congested part of St. Louis with awful traffic, that makes people feel really rushed as they leave after a Rams game.

In addition, from 2007-2009 the St. Louis Rams had only won 2 games at home. This year though, they might actually be loving playing in St. Louis as they are 4-2 at home. As much as this stadium is helping them out this year, the Rams are in need of a new one.

3- Oakland-Alameda County Coliseum (Oakland, California)

One of sports most well known stadiums has been known by football fans as one of the worst. The Raiders football has one of the ugliest shapes of a football field on earth. This football field should only be the place where the Oakland A’s play and not the Raiders.

Although the A’s are planning on moving in a few years, I feel as if they should just completely tear this stadium apart and build it from scratch. It’s not a pretty sight when your playing a football game and the weather is always dark, as well as the people dressed up in all dark colors.

For all the garbage Al Davis has given the Raider Nation for the past few years, I think that a brand new stadium would be a great gift for them.

2- Monster/Candlestick Park (San Fransisco, California)

In addition, the one of the NFL’s worst stadiums and the the team desperately in need of a relocation, as soon as possible, is Candlestick Park in San Fransisco. The 49ers stadium used to be an iconic landmark to football fans, but over the years it has turned into a dump.

The stadium itself isn’t a pretty site and the inside of it is in awful conditions physically. The stadium itself, still reminds me of a baseball park from the old Giants. The stadium is in need of a change so badly that even owners and management agrees as they are trying to relocate to anywhere they can. Too bad the economy isn’t helping them out as much and luck isn’t in their direction.

Maybe if the 49ers had a new stadium, they would be known as the best team in town, instead of the San Fransisco Giants.

<img alt="MINNEAPOLIS, MN - DECEMBER 13: A torn section of the roof sags inside the Hubert H. Humphrey Metrodome on December 13, 2010 in Minneapolis, Minnesota.
1- Metrodome (Minneapolis, Minnesota)

Finally, the NFL’s worst stadium and the stadium desperately in need of an improvement, as soon as possible, is the Metrodome in Minnesota. Although it might be great for fans knowing they get to play in a dome, the Metrodome flat out sucks.

The smartest decision ever made in professional sports was when the Twins decided they were sick of playing in the Metrodome. If I was them I would have done the same thing in a heartbeat because the Metrodome is a piece of garbage stadium.

Even before the Metrodome collapsed in half, this stadium was an awful structure from the beginning. It is a very ugly stadium and has the dumbest idea of an inflatable roof. First of all, I am pretty sure the person who built this stadium didn’t know what the precautions of having an inflatable roof was in Minnesota. He maybe thought that the snow wouldn’t do too much damage, but in about five different circumstances in Metrodome history, snow and harsh weather has led to major damage.

With an awful team this year, I hope that the owners in Minnesota can build the Vikings a new stadium to help them get rid of their slump.

When I first looked at the news, I gasped: The Los Angeles Lakers are acquiring Terrence Williams! No way. But it appears that the New Jersey Net’ young stud will be heading to Houston to play with the Rockets in a three-way deal that went down today. Williams was sent to Houston while the Lakers gave up Sasha Vujacic to New Jersey for Joe Smith. The Nets got some draft picks in return. For the Rockets to make room on the roster, they sent Jermaine Williams to the Sacramento Kings in exchange for a second-round draft-pick.

“Welcome welcome, to all my jersey fans an people it’s been real I love y’all an thanks, to HOUSTON what uppppp ‘go Rockets’ lol,” Williams tweeted Tuesday night.

The deal will not be official and final until December 15th.

I think the Rockets get the best end of the deal, obviously when you consider the fact he is the best player in the trade. The Rockets receive another Nets player as they acquired Courtney Lee a while back from the same team. Williams well help out a lot, backing up Kevin Martin at the shooting guard position. I see him doing some good work off the bench as the Rockets continue to dig out of the slump-hole they dug themselves into at the start of the season.

The Nets get a good shooter in Vujacic while the Lakers could use a veteran big man in Joe Smith.

Good deal.

As you can see, around the numbers is a brighter green. Just like those loud socks.

Uniforms won’t make a difference. just ask the Cincinnati Bearcats when they strolled out in the storm trooper outfits for last year’s Sugar Bowl against Florida.

He is, without a doubt in my mind, the equivalent of Ren and Stimpy or the smart ass kid from Leave it to Beaver, one of the most annoying divas in the history of sports, to suddenly leave petulant fans in disgust with the frequent headlines of his annoyance that features regularly in front of tabloids.

This year, of course, I was pretty hopeful of Brett Favre’s return, just as much as I’ve been confident for an economic recovery or just as much as I’ve been optimistic that cartoons in the future can relight the pleasure of watching an amusing kid show other than Sponge Bob or Jimmy Neutron.

In the most ultimate ending to a gloomy tale of 10,000 Favre Tales, on an abnormal, unsettled night, he was battered and defenseless and stared from the sidelines in despair, incapable of bolstering the Minnesota Vikings to essentially a substantial victory as a remedy to release all sorrow or install a sense of pride for a franchise that deteriorated.

And finally, the lack of chemistry dismantled the Vikings, a discombobulated team once worthy of the Super Bowl, now mired in disarray for enduring such a murky season from the midseason firing of Brad Childress to Favre’s nagging ailments. Every now and then in one of the most bizarre scenes, along with the ills of humiliating losses and exhausting drama, the Vikings had an epidemic of disruptions and injuries, while fading into the dark clouds.

However, for the grandfather of quarterbacks who has gray hair and walks like an elderly man, old enough to qualify for a discount as a senior citizen if he goes to have dinner at a restaurant, the days are darkening as a cloud hovers over his failures this season, a sign of misfortune and anguish.

Whatever his intentions are, just as he shows signs of fatigue in the late stages of his accomplished career, he should come to realize that now is a respectable time to depart the game he cherished for decades.

The perception is that he’s mentally and physically tired of the game, no longer active as a full-time quarterback, incapable of enduring continuous hits or harassment on the turf. When he stood on the sidelines and helplessly watched, wearing black workout pants, a black T-shirt and a purple hat, he observed a disheartening night and missed the start of his first NFL game for the first time since Sept. 13, 1992. The sense of fruition deflated for Favre, battered and ineffective as the NFL-record ironman streak at 297 regular-season games came to an unhappy ending, almost smearing an impeccable legacy of transforming into the most eminent quarterback in NFL history.

“I’ve played through a lot of stuff,” he said gently at the postgame interview following a 21-3 loss to the Giants. “This is something different.”

For all the drama swirling around the three-time MVP, known as the biggest nuisance in sports whether it’s for his retiring, un-retiring plans during the summer months to hijack the spotlight or even the lewd text messages he allegedly exchanged with ex-Jets reporter Jenn Sterger, he may want to retire for good without changing his mind of a possible return.

There comes a point in life, especially when he’s approaching the elderly period in his life with fragile limbs or disjointed shoulders, of which Favre needs to cede his ego trip and travel to his rural area home in Mississippi and jump onto his John Deere tractor. This was a horrible way in so many ways to reach a terminal of generally a spotless heritage in the league, symbolized as the best player in the game for setting nearly every passing record.

Here in America, it used to be a birthright saluting the gunslinger after he was manifested as the symbol of the Green Bay Packers, until he held the general manager Ted Thompson hostage of his commonplace, misleading episodes in the summer. For years he has announced retirement in tearful press conferences, but months later announce that he’s coming back for another season, and his constant mind-changing forced the Packers to promptly trade the bewildered face of their franchise to the New York Jets.

There, of course, he lasted one season and agitated perturbed Wisconsin natives, most of whom burnt his jerseys and labeled him as a traitor, simply for joining its archrival the Minnesota Vikings.

Viewed as a enemy in his former town, he was welcomed to Minnesota in the declining phase of his historic career and almost led the Vikings to the Super Bowl a year ago, only to fall short against the improbable New Orleans Saints in the NFC Championship Game, a postseason game in which he was battered and beleaguered and limped off the field.

As it turned out, he slowly walked to the sideline and dropped his head down in a state of shame and grimaced in pain, wearing an agonizing facial expression as if he was ready to call it a prosperous career after he threw a costly interception late. Even if he’s an ageless quarterback at the age of 41, still competent in hurling downfield passes or breaking records endlessly, it seems ill-advised blunders have eclipsed Favre’s proficient fulfillments.

As the rest of the distraught, beaten and disappointed Vikings, with bleak stares and a lack of self-motivation, played without the presence of their pass thrower, Favre alluded to the longevity of his beautiful and long tenure in the league.

Yet again, hopefully, he realizes all good things must come to an end, just as every good story comes to an end and, by now, Favre’s subtle tale is finally over. For the rest of this season, we may spend time wondering if Favre plays ever again, or better yet, decides to leave the game eternally.

If so, he’ll definitely culminate the irritable and annual folly, along with the desire to selfishly fluctuate his mindset and steal the publicity in the summer just to inform the world of his sudden comeback when he skipped minicamps and training camps. This after Favre garners an assumption that he’s beyond superiority, worthy of special privileges to unfairly miss out on preparations and conditioning, all because he’s too lazy or remiss.

As far as the Vikings were concerned, he was a household name, which meant he was an integral piece to Minnesota’s bottomless core in a sphere of the offense, but as time progressed, he encountered broken bones, aches and personal issues.

By history, he’s the toughest quarterback to ever play the game and contain all the fundamentals within a long-lasting streak that deservedly is considered one of the greatest historical marks of all-time. But now, he’s drowning in a whirlpool of injuries and the darkening age of his imposing term is overshadowing a remarkable accomplishment.

What’s next? Purple raindrops fall from the sky in Minnesota? The Vikings’ mascot rides onto the field in a luxurious Corvette, instead of a motorcycle? Prince, a Minnesota native, performs a hit song from his album Purple Rain as a way to solace a saddened fan base and reflect on nostalgic memories of the era when Favre was far more splendid?

There is a sense, believe it or not, that he won’t return next season, now that the Childress reign is over in Minnesota after he was fired midway in the season and replaced by interim coach Leslie Frazier.

In clarity, it almost felt like ex-Vikings coach Childress begged Favre to return for his 20th season and visited him at his Hattiesburg, Miss. home, concerned on the welfare of his quarterback’s health status when he was still recovering from injuries he suffered in the NFC title game.

And with that, Favre carefully reconsidered and eventually assured his teammates and Childress that he’ll return. Right then, he could have informed the team of his unavailability to play, particularly when he was beaten badly in the previous season and appeared weary in the pocket, not as agile eluding the pressure of bulldozing defenders and had been harassed and abused, on the final stages of his playing days.

This because he was obligated to satisfy his teammates although he was absent from the first few weeks of training camp. In terms of his travails, he couldn’t feel his right hand and stood on the sideline, even though Mother Nature almost helped his cause of Monday night’s game, which was relocated at Ford Field in Detroit. Bearing with the unconventional circumstances of watching and losing a streak of longevity, ascendancy and mastery, he seemed like he was ready to disclose on retirement.

It has been nearly 19 seasons, and Favre has proven to be very durable and courageous, owning a fascinating consecutive-game streak that illustrated perfection and persistence. Listed as a game-time decision and inactive for the Vikings game, he couldn’t heal in time to protect his incredible streak and missed his first game in exactly 6,651 days, nursing a damaged shoulder and his right hand is constantly numb, not allowing him to partake.

The oddity of such a downfall is that he’s placed on the injured reserve list, ending an unbelievable stint with injuries after 20 years of greatness. What else is there to accomplished, except retire from the game as a proud individual for winning a lone Super Bowl ring, breaking and setting plateaus and lastly been awarded with the Most Valuable Player award three times, deemed respectively as the endearing icon.

And finally, it’s befitting that Favre preserves his marvel legacy by waving goodbye to football on Sundays, since he felt unfitted to suit up. It was hard to envision the streak coming to an end, and with the streak lost, it’s a visible indicator that now is a time to be an aloof, mow his lawn and live happily in the rural area of the South.

In an unnamed NFL Draft not too long ago, there was a quarterback prospect who put up incredible numbers during his collegiate career. For now, we’ll call him QB1. Despite his outstanding college run, NFL Scouts and NFL General Managers questioned his lack of arm strength and his unorthodox side-arm throwing motion. He ended up being drafted in the first round, but started no games as a rookie (while throwing a few passes including one that went for a score). Sitting on the bench and down the depth chart behind a veteran putting up Pro Bowl numbers, there were a lot of questions and rumors going around about the fate of QB1.

Before we continue the story of QB1, let us first move on to QB2. Said quarterback entered a different NFL Draft, often acclaimed to be the most Pro-Ready quarterback of his draft class, with many mocks having him going in the top 10 selections. Alas, he fell into the second round before being drafted by an unnamed team. He didn’t start the season as his team’s starter, but after the team’s starter suffered a concussion, he got his first chance to play, and two weeks later, was named the starting quarterback. Over the next three weeks, QB2 completed only 47% of his throws, threw three interceptions and one touchdown while fumbling seven times, earning him a 52.2 passer rating. This quarterback, who had so much hype of becoming a great NFL quarterback, was thrust into the starting role for a struggling team with a dismal defense and with a lot of pressure on him to succeed. He was benched after three starts, only to be promoted to starter again three weeks later. Over his next four starts, he was sacked 14 times and threw three interceptions while throwing no touchdown passes. As a result of all this, his confidence is all but lost and NFL scouts who have seen him play say he has regressed from the experience. His footwork is off because he’s constantly facing a pass rush that’s in his face and his decision-making gets worse as the pressure, and losses, mount.

That’s all we’ll note on QB2, now we move on to our final quarterback — QB3, who very closely resembles QB1 in a variety of ways. This quarterback entered an unnamed NFL Draft with a lot of talent and unimagineable college numbers. Despite his performance at the collegiate football level, scouts questioned his quarterback intangibles (such as footwork and throwing motion), and many believed he wouldn’t be drafted before the 3rd round of the draft. He ended up going in the first however, and like QB1, he sat on the bench behind a quarterback who was putting up nice numbers in all but a few games of the season. To many fans’ dismay, QB3 may not get to start one game as a rookie — something QB1 didn’t do until his 3rd year in the NFL.

If you haven’t figured it out by now, QB1 is none other than San Diego’s Phillip Rivers, QB2 is Carolina’s Jimmy Clausen and QB3 is the one and only Tim Tebow. To summarize it all, in 2004 the Chargers drafted Rivers (looking over his unconventional throwing motion knowing he could be groomed into a good quarterback with time), the Denver Broncos drafted Tim Tebow in 2010 with the same mindset, and the Panthers drafted Jimmy Clausen the same year.

The moral of the story of this; starting a rookie quarterback who isn’t ready (or in some cases, like Clausen’s case, thought to be ready but really isn’t), is not always the best solution. Starting Tebow now could prove to be detrimental to his career, and though many will argue with this, Kyle Orton is not the problem. Yes, he is not the solution, but having one of the worst defenses and rushing attacks in the NFL certainly aren’t helping him, and definitely wouldn’t help Tebow out at all.

So before you join the ranks of Bronco fans who have boycotted the Broncos until Tebow starts, consider first that Aaron Rogers, Phillip Rivers and Tom Brady all sat out their rookie seasons under veteran quarterbacks, watching and learning.
